From My Desk - Jan 29, 2021

Hello again, AHD fam. I hope your year has started well and you are feeling optimistic despite being in the dreary days of winter. Is it me or does it feel like we are 4 months into 2021 instead of 4 weeks? There was an violent insurrection in the first week, an inspiring and historic inauguration in the third week, and lots of distractions in between. A friend jokingly asked me to write a post about how to stay focused when the world is falling apart! Trust me, if I had the answer, you would be the first to know.

Here are some interesting findings I wanted to share with you:

  1. I Used to Have a Plan: But Life Had Other Ideas - this is the book I wish I had a few years ago. It would be a thoughtful gift for someone who needs extra emotional support through a tough time like heartbreak, loss of a loved one, or just in a dark funk.

  2. I’ve been feeling extra emo thinking about the stories of POC chasing their American dream lately (you’ve heard my thoughts on Kamala Aunty) and then this 11 part feature of @Atoms founders on the Humans of NY Instagram account had me teary eyed! Worth the read.

  3. I’ll spare you my rant on inexperienced people who are day trading impulsively and instead give you this article if you are curious about the Gamestop controversy.

  4. The US economy lost 140,000 jobs in December. All of them were held by women this is deeply alarming yet not surprising. Sigh.

  5. Something that has brought me a lot of joy these days has been a weekly Zoom call with my girlfriends to discuss the Bachelor episodes in great detail. We laugh so hard at the ridiculous women, the creative memes, and review all of the tea the tabloids reveal along the way. Highly recommend doing something similar with your friends if you’re feeling extra cranky these days.

I’d love to know what caught your eye lately, please share your finds via email or DM.
